Kenneth Snelson (b. 1927, Pendleton, Oregon USA) 1967.  Sculpture composed of delicate tubes supended in matrix of cables
Unsigned and undated but authenticated by Snelson who describes this example as a study for a larger work in 1967.
Provenance: Phillips 80's Sale December 17, 2010, Private Collection.
Spun aluminum, nylon coated steel cable.
Details: Deploying his signature play of “tansegrity,” Snelson suspends and animates tubular forms- allowing them to push, pull and lift one another from the ground and across the plane in a literal dance with gravity.
This example distills tansegrity to it's basic Kite X-form at the heart of so many of Snelson's structures with a shorter strut replacing the basic x-box edge with a perpendicular tube and additional lines for stability transforming, as Snelson puts it, "the basic kite frame into a proper three-strut tensegrity module... My art is concerned with nature in it’s primary aspect, the patterns of physical forces in three dimensional space.”
Essential three-strut tansegrity module
System of lateral suspension resulting from
Spun aluminum tubes and nylon coated steel cable are graphically integrated in a frozen ballet comprised of floating forms, intersecting lines and negative space.
Opposed tension created by a visible cable support system makes possible the suspension of tubular forms in dynamic configurations.
