Gunter Tollman (1926-1990) b. Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Abstract painting on linen with large swaths of black and red over turquoise and gold.
Educated at the esteemed Dusseldorf Art Academy
Exhibitions: Solo Retrospective, Art Museum Gelsenkirchen, 2011.
Painter and sculptor.  Early work in drawing and collage.
In 1969 belonged to group B1 founded by  Rolf Meier, Ferdinand Spindel, Kuno Goschior and Freidrich Grasel.
Lecturer at the University of the Arts Bremen and member of the German  Association of Artists and West German Association of Artists.
Influences: German expressionism and the New School of Paris    
Soulages inspired pallet work built up and across the canvas.
Gestural inflections are buried under these cinder block forms but reveal themselves along the margins and from within the intersections of wide swaths of dark color in the manner of second generation American abstract painter Alfred Leslie.

“In World War II, the 17-year-old man was a soldier in Toll France and was there until his dismissal in 1948 in captivity. In prison, he developed a connection to France and he spent every year until his death some time in this country. His painting was influenced by the style of German Expressionism and the French Nouvelle École de Paris . 
Great man trained as a painter writing, which he completed with great success. After his return from France, he began in 1948 a drawing course at the community college in Gelsenkirchen. From 1956 to 1959 he studied painting with Ferdinand Mack dance at the Art Academy Dusseldorf . He then worked as a painter and created collages . His first exhibition took place in the Arts Hall of Café spark in Gelsenkirchen and he was once a newcomer. With the construction of the new theater in Gelsenkirchen, he was with the artists Yves Klein and Jean Tinguely deals with which he was bound by a long-standing friendship. Thus he had a connection to new art forms. During the 1960s, he tried with his wife, whom he married in 1950, to spread modern and contemporary art and its exhibition rooms were a venue for contemporary art. In 1967 he created the first objects of kinetic art , and made from 1968 to the first orders for Kinetic sculptures in public space . With these objects, which were based on cylindrical forms, he achieved his international breakthrough. 1969 Tollmann belonged with other artists such as Friedrich Gräsel , glass Rolf Meier , Ferdinand Spindel and Kuno Goschior the founders of the artists group B1.  
Tollman was a member of the German Association of Artists , West German Association of Artists and a lecturer at the University of the Arts Bremen in Bremen
